The biggest street legal muscle car event of the year was held last weekend at historic Route 66 Raceway as the NMRA Keystone Automotive Ford Nationals and the NMCA Edelbrock Muscle Car Nationals series were featured at the 5th Annual Nitto Tire Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing. Despite high 90 degree temperatures this event, which marks the middle of the season for NMRA and NMCA, attracted over 700 race and show competitors and 60 vendors and manufacturers on the midway. Elaine Larsen, the first lady of jet car drag racing, approached the 300 mph mark in her new Miller Welding jet dragster to the cheers of over 200 Miller Welding employees who made the 5 hour drive in 4 chartered busses from northern Illinois.
Heads-Up Muscle Car Drag Racing:
Over 13,000 fans witnessed all the cars and all the stars of the NMRA and NMCA compete in their respective classes and then the winners from Team NMRA took on the winners from Team NMCA to race for the coveted Nitto Tire Diamond Tree Super Bowl rings. Team NMCA, who took home the win in 2009, was unable to repeat in 2010 as the NMRA series won the Super Bowl shootouts by a 7 to 5 count! NMRA Turbonetics Pro Outlaw superstar, Mike Murillo, beat 2008 world champion, Conrad Scarry, and “Kentucky” Sam Vincent beat 5 time Nitto-sponsored ProCharger Super Street Outlaw champion, John Urist, in two of the most exciting finals of the event. Fans also got to witness famed street legal drag racer, Billy Glidden, make it to the finals 2 weeks after a bad ADRL crash. Glidden was unable to bring it home as Scorpion Performance Pro Street star, Joe Dunne, made a flawless pass to take the win. Famed Chicagoland street legal racers Nick Scavo and Chuck Samuel came back to NMCA action with great performances for their fans.
