In the big-block dominated Outlaw 10.5 class, a small-block powered Mustang of Tim Essick is very quickly climbing up the ladder and successfully dethroning some of the class heavy hitters!
The 2003 Mustang uses a pair of Precision 88mm turbochargers with Turbosmart Pro-Gate 50 external wastegates. While this combination might seem rather mild when compared to the 94mm turbos used on the big-block engines, this hasn’t stopped Essick from progressively improve his times throughout the season.
At the Ford Fever Classic, held at the Maryland International Raceway, Essick was the top qualifier with a 4.28 at 171 mph, and the eventual winner of the event, once and for all proving the point that small block can be competitive at the pointy end of the Outlaw 10.5 Class.
With the World Cup Finals (Import vs Domestick) quickly approaching, Essick will once again put his Mustang against the big blocks and judging by his recent results low 6.5s quarter mile ETs are expected and possibly even a 6.4. We wish Tim and his team the best of luck.
Chris Escobar’s True Street 1986 Mustang SVO has seen a number of high 8-second runs and over the years has acquired many fans, but two years ago, Chris decided to strip the car down and refit it with a Coyote 5.0L engine.
Sitting in the Fox-body chassis the twin turbo engine is powered by Garrett turbochargers and cooled via an air-to-air intercooler.
We are proud to announce signing on another top competitor, and former 10.5 Champion, Tim Essick to our stable of TurbosmartUSA Team Members.
Tim was up against another Turbosmart USA Team Member – Mike Murillo at the 12th Annual NMRA Ford Nationals with Murillo qualifying #1 and Essick qualifying #2. As you would expect, they ended up facing each other in the final round with Tim Essick taking the win in his first race as a Turbosmart racer.
Tim agrees that the newly installed Turbosmart decals on the hood and the good karma may have been key to his win (that and a couple of Pro-Gate50s) !
NMRA will be rolling into Maryland International Raceway for its third points event over the weekend of May 4-6, 2012. This event replaces the New Jersey stop on the tour with a facility that is large enough to handle the masses of NMRA racers and fans. With legendary track preparation on tap every time MIR opens the doors, the expectation is that many NMRA records could fall at this event – so you want to make sure you clear space for it on your calendar!

Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia played a host to the NMRA / NMCA All Star Nationals. Turbosmart -sponsored Mike Murillo was the top qualifier in the 10.5 Pro Outlaw with an amazing ET of just 6.496 which also secured him a class win.
Things didn’t go so well for Bill Lutz in the Kooks Pro Street who suffered more than his fair share of bad luck, a broken valve damaging his engine forcing Bill compete in his “backup” car on Sunday.
San Antonio based and Turbosmart-sponsored Mike Murillo has achieved what many can only dream of capturing both the NMRA Turbosmart Pro Outlaw 10.5, and the NMCA Super Street crown.
With a string of wins at the start of the season, Murillo dominated the field in Florida, Maryland, Bowling Green, and Michigan resetting both NMRA (6.638 and 217.45mph) and NMCA (6.684) records along the way.
Turbosmart would like to congratulate Mike Murillo and his team for an outstanding effort this season.

The final stop for the Keystone Automotive NMRA Ford Nationals will be the Beech Bend Raceway at Bowling Green, Kentucky.
As the final event, this is not only one of the NMRA’s oldest, but hands down the largest. With over 400 heads-up race cars attending last year, you can expect close to 500-600 packing the raceway this year.
5.0 Mustang will also host its awesome King of the Street competition where 16 of the best all-around Mustangs shoot for the coveted title! The World Finals also features one of our largest car shows, swap meets and vendor midways.
