The Evolution of the Evo

turbosmart mitsubishi lancer evolution EVO

Currently in its tenth generation, the Mitsubishi Evolution (aka Evo) family tree started in 1992. Initially a Japanese-only release, the car proved very popular and it quickly spread throughout the UK and Europe through private import channels. By its sixth generation Mitsubishi was selling the Evo in a number of European countries and entered the North American market in 2003 with the Evo VIII.

The early Evos were homologated Group A cars – the WRC rules required 2500 production models to be made, which could then be modified to compete in the WRC. Based around a proven VR-4 drivetrain, the first Evo set the blueprint for a car that would end being not only a rally legend but a cult car amongst performance enthusiasts worldwide. The combination of a 2.0L turbocharched DOHC four cyclinder engine, matched to an AWD drivetrain became the Evo’s trademark and is still used in its latest incarnation.

The Tomi Makinen Edition Evo 6. In its rally-spec version Makinen would go on to win four driver’s championships.

While Mitsubishi had no problems selling the homologation numbers of the early Evos, the car became a real sales success after a string of WRC championships in the hands of Tommi Makinen. Makinen won the driver’s titles in 1997, 97, 98 and 99, and a manufacturer’s title (with Richard Burns) in 1998.

By the time Mitsubishi pulled out of the WRC competition in 2005, the Evo brand was synonymous with high performance, tuning and circuit and rally racing and, in the hands of privateers, Evos continued to race and win in various forms of motorsport.

Mitsubishi’s last factory rally car – the Lancer WRC05.

With their proven formula of light-weight, great handling, AWD and a very potent engine, many late model Evos continue to dominate at race tracks all around the world. The three-Evo, Pro-Duct Racing Team has won three back-to-back Australian Manufacturer’s Championships, in the Time Attack Racing, Sierra Sierra Enterprises Evo from USA and Cyber-Evo from Japan have dominated the sport, with the current world champion’s Nemo Racing Evo proving the Mitsubishi Evo is still the car to beat on the time attack scene.

The Mitsubishi Evolution also enjoys a strong following amongst tuning enthusiasts with many early models still being restored, modified, driven and raced. As the early models become rarer, the demand for them seems to be growing. If you’re an Evo novice, we’ve compiled a quick guide to the car’s lineage:

Evolution I – III. 1992 – 1995
The first Evos were bases around the proved VR-4 engine and drivetrain. Suspension upgrades and wheelbase adjustments were made for Evo II and III with the latter also featuring a revised turbocharger.

Evolution V-VI. 1998- 2000
With a new “World Rally Car” class in the WRC, Evo did not need to follow the homologation rules. Mitsubishi redesigned the Evo with a new turbocharger, brakes and more aggressive bodywork. Power stayed at the Japanese self-restricted 276hp.

Evolution VII. 2001-2002
A new, larger platform means Evo VII gains weight but chassis modifications make it a better handling vehicle. Active centre diff and an improved limited slip diff were also added.

Evolution VIII. 2003-2005
With a new 6-speed gearbox and improved aerodynamics, the Evo VIII was the first Evo to be sold in the USA.

Modifying your Evo – Part 1

turbosmart mitsubishi lancer evolution EVO

The Mitsubishi Evo, in all its incarnations, is a common sight on race tracks, rallies, cruises and in performance workshops.  With a well-balanced chassis and a proven engine-drivetrain combo, the factory Evo is an excellent base for performance modifications, making it relatively easy to turn the stock car into a tarmac-shredding monster.

The tried and proved 4G63T (1987–2007) and 4B11T (2008–present) engines are potent and quite capable of producing big horsepower. A quick check on numerous Evo forums reveals that the most common upgrades are centred around getting more power out of the engine, followed by suspension and brakes upgrades.

Turbosmart has recognised the tuning fraternity’s fascination with the Evo long time ago and now offers a big range of products suitable for the Evo platform.

BOOST CONTROL

The simplest and most cost-effective way of increasing the boost is via a Gated Boost Controller Valve (GBCV). Easy to fit and set, a GBCV offers a simple boost control solution if you’re  after a mild boost increase while running a factory turbo. Once fitted, you simply set your boost and forget it. The boost can be adjusted under the hood (Boost Tee) or from within the cabin (In-Cabin and Dual Stage). Turbosmart offers three types of GBCVs:

Dual Stage Boost Controller

The Dual Stage Boost Controller offers a fast boost response with two adjustable boost levels. It allows you to toggle between high and low boost on the fly via a cabin-mounted switch. Both high and low boost settings are fully adjustable.

Suitable for all Mitsubishi Evo models.

If you want to have more control over your Evo’s turbocharger than the GBCVs can provide – the next step up are Electronic Boost Controllers. Offering a plethora of useful features like boost-by-gear, overboost shutdown or boost correction, these units really put the boost control at your finger tips. Turbosmart offers two types of electronic boost controllers:

Team XXX at the 2012 Honda Day

Team XXX’s RSX is tuned and back on a race track. Here is the report as filed by the team.

turbosmart turbo tam xxx rsx racing honda acura

It’s been a long winter and it feels great to get back to racing! We got the RSX tuned, made 600whp @ 21psi and took it out for some testing two weeks prior to this event. Brand new turbo setup and a re-freshed engine along with a few more goodies.

turbosmart turbo tam xxx rsx racing honda acura

This 2012 Honda Day event had record high attendance for the Atco racetrack and a beautiful 80-85 degrees sunny day! We raced in the 10.50 Index class and ended up losing in the 2nd round. The RSX improved every run, but we are still trying to figure out traction issues we are having which should definitely get the car much closer the 10.50 number we need to run. Car ran 10.86, 10.84 and 10.82 at around 138mph.

The car got tons of exposure and turned lots of heads as it’s really the only RSX out there running some good times. Thank you for your help this year and in the past with parts for the RSX!

e-Boost2 helps Josh’s Camaro get on boost

turbosmart e Boost2 Chevy Camaro

This stealth Camaro belongs to Josh Forster. It runs a 408 small block Chevy with a single 91mm turbo, Turbosmart Pro-Gate 50 and a Race Port bov.

Josh installed an e-Boost2 and we help him set it up at the Cunningham Motorsports workshop. The car responded beautifully; we were able to get it to 690hp at the wheels with 9 pounds of boost on pump gas.

turbosmart e Boost2 Chevy Camaro

We have made some runs at different boost setpoints and managed to get 1096hp at the wheels with only 17.3 pounds of boost. Quite a remarkable increase in power with just about 9 more bounds of boost and the methanol injection activated. All this is even more impressive considering the has never broken the 1000hp mark before!

The graphs below show what we were able to accomplish with a perfectly flat boost curve after 4 pulls.
